      Article in Scientific American by Ian Chant about the effects of family problems on the developing brain. 

    • Resilience: A Meta-Analytic Approach

      This study investigated the relationship between psychological resilience and its relevant variables by using a meta-analytic method. The results indicated that the largest effect on resilience was found to stem from the protective factors, a medium effect from risk factors, and the smallest effect from demographic factors.

      Communication: the process of sending and receiving messages through verbal or nonverbal means.

      Verbal communication: effectively presenting your thoughts through talking.

      Nonverbal communication: the act of conveying a thought, feeling, or idea through physical gestures, posture, and facial expressions.

      Active listening: the practice of being present and engaged with what a speaker is saying and indicating understanding, through verbal and nonverbal feedback.

      Selective listening: the practice of paying attention to only the things that you want to hear; filtering the speaker’s message and selecting from what he or she says, a part that affects you or that interests you most.

        The Adverse Childhood Experiences, or “ACEs,” quiz asks a series of 10 questions (see below) about common traumatic experiences that occur in early life. Since higher numbers of ACEs often correlate to challenges later in life, including higher risk of certain health problems, the quiz is intended as an indicator of how likely a person might be to face these challenges.
